All the advances in ergonomics are wonderful. Keyboards are made with wrist rests, monitors are made to adjust up and down and cut down on glare, desks and chairs are built to protect the back... these are almost always standard.
Because of the standard ergonomics built into today’s office furniture, I do not suffer from eye strain from being on the computer, carpal tunnel syndrome, or get backaches from sitting incorrectly. Still, it doesn’t solve my particular problem.
My particular problem is a combination of lymphedema and the need to move. My condition means that if I sit with my legs down for more than half an hour or so, my feet and legs swell with lymphatic fluid. What is more, I am not supposed to sit for more than an hour or so at a time as it is bad for circulation.
I have also found that I am much more productive when I can move around.
What I need is a convertible reclining treadmill desk (check out my hub on walkstations). Lazy Boy meets Gold’s Gym meets Gateway. With a convertible reclining tread desk, I could kick back with my feet up for half an hour or so, then fold and slide away my seat to walk on the treadmill for another hour or so... I can’t even begin to see how such a contraption would be attractive, but let me tell you, it has to be better than what I deal with right now.
Right now, I either sit with my feet down or turn sideways (kind of) and put my feet up on a stool with a pillow on it for added height, turn slightly awkwardly to view my monitor, and suffer from neck and hip strain after 5 to 10 minutes.
Would a laptop and a lazy boy be the answer? Zzzzzzzzzzzzzzz.... and then there’s the “gotta move” part.
I know there are many out there who have lymphedema, circulatory issues, edema, and/or trouble with sitting still. I think there would be a market for a convertible reclining treadmill desk. I know I would buy one if someone would make one. Feel free!
