“The Curse” - first paragraph, juvenile fiction

The steps creaked and moaned whenever anyone used them to reach the front door. Most old steps do so, but the creaking and moaning of these particular steps caused most people to walk around to the side of the house and use the newer cement steps at the kitchen or even to change their minds about visiting altogether. Whether they were afraid the steps would give way or the uncanny resemblance to the entrance of a haunted home caused chills too fierce to ignore is uncertain. The Webb children claimed there was another reason for the problem. They believed their house was cursed and the faulty stairs were meant to warn and not threaten.

Before you start making snap judgments about the children such as “they must be highly imaginative” or “they must be given to ridiculous notions”, you should know that there was much evidence to back up their claim. In fact, though the house had been cursed for decades, the majority of the evidence piled up within one year.
