I once read a romance set in the 1800's in which a woman was convicted of manslaughter in the death of a friend. Her sentence was to become a servant to the widower. She was under house arrest and could not leave the property unless she was with him. Of course, the woman was not guilty of manslaughter. It was self-defense - but the punishment DID fit the crime of which she was convicted.
Anyway... Tucson police report that the search for Isabel Celis has already cost over one million dollars. This is another area in which guilty parties could be sentenced according to their crime. Indentured servitude to the county, state, and federal government until the money spent has been paid off. I am not talking about chain gangs. I mean work that ends up putting money BACK into tax payers' pockets. On top of that, the guilty should be forced to do something that would benefit all of those affected by the absence or loss of that precious child. I know, I know... slavery is illegal -- but if prison is an exception to holding someone hostage, why shouldn't indentured servitude be an exception to the anti-slavery law? Punishment AND restitution. It makes sense to me.
